Covent Garden

Morning by HogarthCovent Garden in the 18 th Century was a market place for both food and sex. I encountered little of either on a winter morning at 6.55 AM.

First to step out of the darkness was a man wrapped in a blanket. He asked for some money and then moved on. Then came office workers, both male and female, but the commotion witnessed by Hogarth was sadly lacking. Nobody was on their way to church, no traders protested and no 'gentlemen' cavorted with prostitutes. All the same, I felt the presence of the ghosts of Hogarth's Londoners.
