Time out of mind

Paintings and drawings from the floating world

MEXICO, BANGKOK, TOKYO, SAN FRANSISCO, LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK

Ed Gray turns continental drifter in a show encompassing six major world cities. With a sharp pencil and a sharper eye, Gray ventures from dingy back alleys to cloud-capped towers, via gorgeous palaces and solemn temples. Mexican riot policemen, demonstrator, papaya seller, shoe shiner, street entertainer, Churros maker, kife sharpener, devout Catholic, musician, dios de los muertos celebrant, sioux indian, Mexican wrestler, Thai Boxer, Sumo, Buddhist monk, ladyboy, hustler, punter, beggar, Tokyo fish monger, Japanese salaryman, Geisha, metroguard, Gothic Lolita, Shibuya fashionista, Manga noodle eater. An unfolding, timeless pageant of lives lived in an exhibition that circumnavigates the globe from east to west and tries to bring home some small glimpse of this vision.

"Our revels are now ended. These our actors,

As I foretold you, were all spirits, and

Are melted into air, into thin air,

And like the baseless fabric of this vision

The cloud capped towers the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

Yea all which it inherit, shall disolve,

And like this insubstantial pageant faded,

Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life,

Is rounded with a sleep"

William Shakespeare, The Tempest Act 5 Scene 1
