Ed Gray Art

Evening by HogarthNighttime,  looking towards the statue of King Charles in what is now Trafalgar Square proved equally illuminating.I could find no evidence of back street dentists but instead there were plenty of drinkers carousing home. The wagon that has crashed in the Hogarth engraving was the minicab of its day, hence the black cab. The two panicking night watchmen (the fire of London was fairly recent history) became the policeman. The pub sign I stood next to in order to draw the scene contained, ironically, a picture of a wagon.

I felt Hogarth's presence so strongly here that I sat him in the pub with a drink. He is watching the scene with the look of one who has seen it all before.
